6 Tips to Help You Get Started

Happy New Year! 2019, here we are! Who’s ready!?

What I should be asking is…who made the famous “Resolutions List”!? With every New Year, comes a sense of fresh start, a new chance to get it right, a new beginning! New hopes, new intentions, you know the drill…new year, new you! AmIright!?

Here’s a few tips, that I picked up in the last few months, on my own personal journey, from fearful to faith-filled, that I hope will help you get rolling in the right direction.

Don’t wait until you’re “READY”

Truth is – we are never ready.

It’s easy to make excuses and “start tomorrow”. It’s easy to stay where it’s comfortable, even if it means being unhappy. You’ve heard the saying, if you really want something, you’ll find a way…if not, you’ll find an excuse. Finding an excuse is so much easier than finding a way.

“It’s raining, today, so I’ll run, tomorrow.”

“I don’t know enough, yet, so I’ll keep studying and start next month.”

My advice is this. You don’t have to start big, and you don’t have to know everything… but you do have to start. So, go for it! Say yes and take that first step of faith. Get outside of your comfort zone, be okay with starting small and fumbling through those first steps, learn what needs improvement, and grow as you move forward!

Put yourself out there

Be 100% yourself. Embrace discomfort. Find your brave and put yourself out there. Personally, this is one of the hardest things for me because I spent a lot of life building walls. Now I’m working towards tearing those walls down and cultivating real and meaningful relationships. That means putting my guard down, being real, raw, and sometimes emotional to allow people back in.

It’s not an easy thing to do, but we serve a great God and He will bring the right people into your life at the right time. He’s equipped you with everything you need. Don’t apologize, don’t stress, and don’t be afraid – we were created to be brave all along, and we are meant for BIG things! Just be YOU… wonderful and beautiful you!

Be sure to put “YOU” on your priority list

Have you ever done that? Have you ever sat down and listed out the most important things – the stuff where you really wanted to invest your time and your heart because they are the things that matter most? And, have you ever written the word “ME” on it? Friends, self-care is not selfish – it’s mandatory! You cannot pour from an empty cup.

When we don’t invest in ourselves we experience burn out. Everyone’s self-care looks a little different. There is no one way to devote some time to yourself. But, you have to find whatever works for you and you have to make it a priority…and, I mean a top of the list kind of priority! Love yourself – invest in yourself – take care of your body – it’s a must.

Focus on one thing at a time

This is huge. It’s also not easy. New Year’s rolls around and we have these page long lists of areas to improve, goals to reach, and new things to try. January first comes and we hit the ground running…we try to accomplish all.the.things… all.at.once. But the staggering statistics prove it year after year…only 8% of us are able to make our resolutions a reality.

What if we took that list and prioritized it and focused on one thing at a time? One BIG thing…

What do you want most? What is a reasonable accomplishment that points you in the direction of that dream? Focus on that ONE thing until you’ve reached it and THEN move to the next step. Instead of trying to handle every “yes” at once, while still living through life and whatever it throws at us, we simply add ONE thing until it’s become habit. Consistently moving forward and experiencing growth.

Don’t compare

Easier said than done! Trust me, I get it! It’s so easy to look at someone who is sitting where I want to be sitting and compare their life to mine. But, here’s the thing…they used to be sitting where I am! They had to work hard to get to the spot they are…and so do I! Comparison is truly the thief of joy and it will wreck you every.single.time.

The best way to combat comparison is to be intentional about being grateful. Every Sunday, I have it scheduled in my calendar, with a reminder, to take a few minutes, to reflect on the previous week, and to write down 10 things that I am thankful for, specifically from that week. I also created a list of weekly reflection questions that I think through and reflect on. This helps me to focus on me and my growth; what went well, what needs work, and how truly blessed I am! This is a game changer, friends!

Work hard – Pray harder

Keep going – don’t quit when things get hard. Don’t give up when you “think” nothing is happening. Don’t overestimate what you can do in a short amount of time while underestimating God’s perfect timing. Work hard.

Keep praying – keep Jesus at the center of your dream. Don’t leave him out of it. If you get sidetracked, realign and press on. However hard you’re working. Pray harder.

Happy New Year, Friends! I pray that you are abundantly blessed in 2019 and this is your very best year, yet!
